Biographies
Salvatore Diacono was tried and convicted of the felony offences of barratry and piracy at the General Sessions of Oyer and Terminer in Valletta, Malta in October 1817. Diacono was a ship's captain. He and his fellow convicted, Tomaso Frendo (a merchant) had sold off some of the ship's cargo and then scuttled the vessel.
They were both sentenced to be hung. A few days later they were marched through the streets with ropes around their necks to the place of execution. Diacono watched as Frendo walked up to the scaffold and the platform dropped. Diacono subsequently had his death sentence commuted by The Governor, Thomas Maitland. He was then sentenced to 14 years transportation.
