Biographies

Abraham Bilbie was born in 1810, Abraham married Elizabeth COLLINGS in 1829. They had two children Michael born in 1829 but unfortunately died in 1832, and William born in 1833. So far, so good.
In 1834, Abraham was arrested for the offence of Larceny (burglary) of an 88-year-old lady, Diana SWANN in a house near Brockley Hall, Brockley Coombe, Somerset in the United Kingdom. Unfortunately, Diana Swann’s ‘corpse’ was found near the entrance of Brockley Hall. It is believed that Mrs Swann chased after them and died’ Abraham was sent to Ilchester Gaol where he is described as: 5 ft 9 inches tall with a sallow complexion, and a long face. He has Brown hair and hazel eyes. In the England and Wales Criminal Registers, Abraham is sentenced to 7 years Transportation.
In 1838 Abraham is aged 28 years old when he is convicted at the Assize courts for Burglary and is sentenced to Death. This is transmuted to transportation to Tasmania for life. Abraham was convicted on the 31 March 1838. In the Somerset England Gaol Register of Felons, the offence has been entered as:
‘Burglary in the dwelling of Diana Swann. Stealing a quantity of silver coins’
In the UK Prison Commission Records, the Gaoler’s report reads:
‘Life penitentiary, bad character, poor but honest’ his remarks go on to read that Abraham has: ‘3 dots on his forehead and on the upper lip. A mole under the right jaw. He has a scar on the inner right hand and right arm.
Abraham was transported on the Coromandel to Tasmania.
In 1841 Abraham appears as prisoner 2921 in the New South Wales
& Tasmania Australian Convict Musters List.
Also in 1841, Abraham appears in the Tasmanian Hobart Gazette, under the heading of Convict Dept:
‘The following engagements of pass-holders in private service have been sanctioned by Lieutenant Governor Robert Henry, Superintendent Do… quarry 3 months’
In 1847 Abraham married Ellen CAHILL. I am unable to ascertain any information for Ellen.
In 1848 Abraham receives a Conditional Pardon as shown in the New South Wales & Tasmania Australian Convict Pardons and Tickets of Leave.
