Biographies

James was baptised 31 October 1819 Stoke by Nayland, Suffolk to James Bacon and his wife Mary (nee Holmes). The second child of 10 children.

James Bacon (aged 21) was charged with breaking into the house of Thomas Mattock(s) on 29 January 1840 and breaking into one of Mr Mattock(s) trunks. Newspaper report states that although contents were strewn around nothing was missing. James was sentenced to 14 years transportation for "housebreak before convicted of felony" on 17 March 1840 at the Suffolk, Ipswich Quarter Sessions held at Bury St Edmonds.

He was sent to Prison Hulk Ship Leviathan and transferred to the Ship Asia on 6 April 1841 for transportation to Van Diemen's Land. Asia departed 12 April 1841 and arrived 21 August 1841.

Prison hulk ship Leviathan had been a 74 gun war ship which fought in the Battle of Trafalgar alongside Nelson's flagship Victory, under the command of Henry Baynton. She was built at Chatham and was launched in 1790 and was converted to a prison ship in 1816 at the end of the Napoleonic wars. On Antiques Roadshow (2015), there was a letter from Lord Nelson giving Henry Baynton a sheep before the Battle of Trafalgar. The Sheep survived the Battle and was given to a farmer in Devon who bred from it and went on to win prizes at shows with its off-spring.

Notes of the gaolers on the prison hulk report James as being of Very Bad character, had twice been in prison and once convicted of felony. (His previous convictions had been in January 1838 for entering the house of Hannah Sparrow and stealing a half sovereign (sentence: 1 year) and in June 1839 for stealing 3 ferrets and 3 tame rabbits, for refusing to pay penalty and costs (sentence: 6 months))

The Muster Roll dated 1846 shows James had a third Class Pass and assigned to Mr Rilby, Westbury.

The Muster Roll dated 1849 shows James had a Ticket of Leave. I found a ticket of leave approved 1852 which shows James had served 11 years and 3 months in the colony.
