Biographies

Philip Marks was born 1778 in London England and was jewish. His father was Joshua Isaiah and Rosetta Marks. Philip was married to Sarah Solomon in 8 Dec 1813 in London. Together both they had 3 children Joshua, Hannah and Rosetta. Papers showed there may have been a fourth child who went into a care of a relative, and this child did not come to Van Dieman's Land.

Philip had an interesting life with a search of the Old Bailey records showing a number of interactions mainly for theft. He had been found guilty of theft and sent to Van Dieman's land where he lived out his life.

During this time he had attempted to absconding or was successfully abscond on 7 different occasions. This resulted in 125 lashing and spending time in either Macquarie Harbour or Sarah Island. One of his most interesting escapes found him being returned from Mauritius on the Prince Regent and recieving 50 lashes.

Sarah and the children arrived in Hobart Town, and Philip was assigned to Sarah and later given Free Pardon on 21 May 1840. Philip out lived his wife and died on 31 March 1864.
