Biographies

Evan Preece was born 12 June 1803 and christened 19 June 1803 at Dilwyn Catholic church in Herefordshire England. His parents were John & Mary Preece. Evan and his brother John Preece were tried together on 22 March 1824 at Hereford Lent Assizes court. Nothing further is known of John and records strongly suggest he was never transported. Evan was sentenced to death which was later commuted to Life transportation. He left England 9 August 1824 per 'Princess Charlotte' which arrived to Hobart VDL 9 November that same year. Evan married a free Irish migrant Margaret Calaghan 26 June 1837 and they had at least 10 children all born in Tasmania apart from the youngest who was born at Mount Gambier SA or Victoria about 1852 after their arrival there from Tas. Evan and his family travelled from Tas to Portland Vic arriving 6 July 1851 per 'City of Sydney'. Evan died 6 July 1860 at Mount Gambier. His children all had large families leaving behind many direct descendants some of whom still live in the same area all these years later.
