Biographies

Colin Bain was charged with breaking in to the shop of James Robertson, baker, in Brechin, Scotland during the months of October-December 1841 and stealing between forty and fifty pounds. Bain pleaded guilty to the thefts, but not to the amount alleged stolen. Bain was found guilty and sentenced to 10 years' transportation (Source: The Perthshire Advertiser, 5 May 1842, p. 3).

Colin Bain was born to George Bean/Bain and Isabella Ogilvy around 1823. He had two brothers George and Francis and a sister Ann. He lived in Brechin, Scotland. At the time of his arrest, Colin and Francis were apprenticed to their father George Bain who was a Master Clockmaker/Watchmaker. (Source: 1841 Census, www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk)

Colin Bain (aged 23) married Mary Robe (aged 21) on 28 February 1848 at St John's Church (Church of England), New Town, Hobart. (Source, marriage certificate). Colin and Mary had a number of children: Francis Alfred in 1849, Colin in 1850, Harriet Isabella in 1855 and Elizabeth in 1857 (source: birth certificate extracts). Elijah Mathias was born in 1858 (source: family documents). Colin's wife Mary died in 1877 at 52 years of age.

Convict records described Colin Bain as well behaved and of good disposition. He could read and write. Whilst a convict, Colin served with the Brown's River Gang and was granted his Ticket of Leave in 1847.

In 1873 Bain was sentenced to 12 months jail for illegally pawning and in 1880 Bain was also sentenced to 6 months jail for illegally pawning (Source, Convict Record CON 33/1/31).

Bain died at the Invalid Depot in New Town on 30 April 1903, aged 81(source: Convict Record CON 33/1/31)
