Biographies
Isobel Cuthbert was born 9th February 1840, in Forfar, county Angus in Scotland. The last child of four, or possibly five, born to parents Ann Boath and William Cuthbert. All her siblings died in infancy and her mother also passed away, four months after Isobel was born.
She came to the attention of the law after she ran away from home, aged nineteen; she was terrified of her father and said “she would rather suffer death than to be in his presence again”.
Although persuaded to return to her father’s house, Forfar’s senior churchman was sufficiently alerted, or alarmed, by her running away from home and the accounts of her fear of her father that he launched an investigation to find out what had happened.
That investigation eventually led, two years later, to William Cuthbert and his daughter Isobel being called to appear at the Perth Court of Justiciary to answer charges of Incest.
Isobel was found Guilty and sentenced to transportation, her father absconded from Justice.
