Biographies

William Males was born in Hertfordshire to George Males and Ann (nee Price) in August 1821. He was transported to Tasmania on the convict ship Henrietta for stealing 4lbs of fat and a sack, arriving on 19th November 1843. His initial sentence was 7 years. On arrival, William's trade was noted as "Waggoner".

William married convict Eliza Masters at Hobart on 3rd December 1849. Their son William James was born on 24th December 1850 in Hobart.

On 12th May 1856, William was re-married to Susan White, a convict who arrived in Tasmania in 1840. They had 2 children, George Shadrick (b1856) and Thomas (b1860).

William was registered as the Licensee of the King's Arms Inn, Upper Murray Street for a period during the 1860s with his 2nd wife Susan.

After Susan died in 1888, William subsequently married again, to Eliza Harriett Maurice. He was living with Eliza at the time of his death on 31st March 1905 at Church Street, North Hobart.

Willam is buried in a family plot at Section H4, Cornelian Bay Cemetery, Hobart.
