Biographies

Sarah Mallon or Maloney as she was also known, lived in County Armagh, Ireland. She was a house servant, milkmaid and made butter according to her convict indent. She was tried in the Spring Assizes, 1822 in County Armagh for stealing a cotton dress. It was recorded that she was 19 years old and she was sentenced to transportation for 7 years.
On 3 August, 1822 she was transferred to Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin to await transportation. From there, on 18 December, she was transferred to the Convict Ship 'Woodman' and stayed there anchored at Cork until finally setting sail 25 January 1823. It sailed via Rio and arrived in Sydney 25 June 1823.
Once landed Sarah was transferred to the Female Factory at Parramatta to await assignment. From the relevant Muster it appears that she was assigned to Thomas Ryan in Sydney.
4 October 1824 she and James Ansell/Hansell applied to the governor for permission to marry. Permission was received and they were married by Rev Wm Cowper at St Philip's Church, Sydney 25 October 1824.
James received his Ticket of Leave 30 June 1825 for the district of Parramatta. It appears that they settled there as four children have been identified as being born to them in the Parramatta district: Mary Ann, 5 April 1825; Susan, 10 or 18 July 1826; James, 14 March 1829; and William, baptised 27 November 1832. The first three children were baptised at St John's C/E Parramatta and William's baptism is recorded on the microfilm of St Mary's Catholic Church, Sydney.
It is believed that James died in 1848 but as yet no death has been identified for Sarah. It was mistakenly thought that Sarah was the Sarah Hansell who committed suicide in Richmond in 1891 but this was found to be Sarah Hansell nee Whitney. Sarah Mallon/Maloney's death has not yet been found.
