Research notes

Martin Ambrose Shannon was born in Ireland in about 1802. He was found guilty of stealing a pig in Dublin and was sentenced to seven years transportation to Australia.

Martin was granted in certificate of freedom on 6 November 1839 and settled in the Maitland area at Rosebank, near Hinton.

In 1842 Martin was declared bankrupt, owing his debtors a total of £90. He remained in the Maitland area and during this time he referred to himself as a ‘settler’ (noted on children’s birth re

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Martin Shannon was murdered in Dubbo on 12 February 1849. The murder took place in stables where Martin was beaten by William Murray following a disagreement.

Martin was buried at Millers Rest on 28 March 1849, aged 45 years.

Martin married (?) Catherine Kelleher and together they had four children – John (born 18/11/1840), Mary Ann (born 1843), Julia (born 20/11/1844) and Patrick (born 17/10/1847).

Looking back over these notes I do not think this Martin Shannon was killed he died after being bitten by a snake when harvesting in the Maitland area of NSW

The Martin Shannon from the Herculese was the martin Shannon that died on the Hunter River. The one that died in Dubbo was NOT.

Martin Shannon from the Herculese. Has a large number of descendants in both NSW and Queensland who have regular get togethers and published lots of documentation on the family since Martin's arrival
