Biographies

When Abraham Sidebottom was born in 1805 in Cheshire, England to parents William and mother Mary (nee Hegginbottom) known as Mally.

Abraham was sent to Australia in 1831 as a convict for "uttering forged notes". He was originally sentenced to death which was converted to transportation to Australia.

He arrived in Australia as a convict on board the ship Isabella in May 1832. According to the prison records Abraham was 5' 6-1/4" tall and of fair complexion.

Abraham's brother William, was already in Australia having been also convicted of uttering forged notes some 18 months earlier. They were were both placed as convict laborer's in the same location on the FA Hely property near Brisbane Waters NSW (Now Gosford)

In 1836 the two brothers started a stonemason's business W&A Sidebottom Stonemasons. They would have still technically been convicts at that time however, it appears that they had been rewarded for good behavior and had been granted a ticket of leave, leading a reasonably free life at that time working on a property FA Hely.

Abraham married Catherine Connor who was also a convict on 29 July 1840 in Gosford, New South Wales.

Interestingly, Abraham and Catherine had a son Moses who was baptised twice. Once as a Catholic and the other as Church of England. I assume this was to appease both families, because Catherine's convict records state she was a Catholic and Abraham was Church of England.

In Dec 1840 he was charged with stealing a cow from his employer the charge was disputed because he had a receipt; however, during the trial the receipt was found to refer to a different cow.
Abraham was sent to gaol on the 24 Dec 1844 which was four years later so it is not clear why or if it related to this case.

In 1851 after the 'great flood" Abraham and Catherine established a tobacco farm in Cooranbong, NSW.

He died on 17 July 1877 in Minmi, New South Wales, at the age of 72.

His wife Catherine would live another 30 years dying at age 91. Her death noticed stated that they had 61 grandchildren and 66 great grandchildren at the time.
