Biographies

William was born in Northamptonshire about 1831 to Thomas Essom and Mary Fenn. Their marriage in 1829 was in Stibbington, Huntingdonshire.
William had younger siblings - Elizabeth, John Thomas, Mary Ann, Alice, Maria and Thomas. Another sibling named Mary Ann died in infancy.
The family lived in the Nene and Welland valleys.
William, aged 15 and another boy James Wilson aged 14 were convicted of larceny (theft of private property) in a Peterborough court, April 9 1846 and sentenced to 7 years hard labour in Australia. I believe the offence took place in Wansford, Northamptonshire.
William departed England 2nd June 1847 aboard the Joseph Somes; arrived at Port Philip Bay 24th September 1847.
William married Ellen Harvey in 1854 in Victoria, Australia. She was born in Jersey and was baptised with her twin brother Henry in Dec 1835. Her parents Barnabas and Mary along with Ellen, Henry and 2 younger children sailed to Australia in 1848/9 aboard the Osprey.
William and Ellen had 5 children - Alice, Emily, Julia, William and Henry.
William died in May 1867 in Victoria, Australia. He was buried in Old Ballarat Cemetery along with his three children that died in 1869: Alice, Henry and William. Graveyard Section WN, 08 Row 1 Grave 3
