Biographies

James Galpin is a GGG Grandfather to my husband.
Sentence: 7 Years Last known offence in UK - transported to Freemantle Prison. James Galpin was a labourer/farmer. Married with 5 children. He was charged with stealing two sheepskins. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty of stealing but guilty of receiving. James confessed he had suffered four years' penal servitude for a felony in 1856, and three months imprisonment for another felony in 1862, besides imprisonment for various other offences. He was sentenced to 7 years penal servitude and transported in 1866 to Western Australia. He was certified freedom in 1871 and never returned home. He was believed to have bred horses and employed two ex-convicts on his farm. He died on the 30th September 1900 aged 74. He left his estate to a Jane Turvey who we assume was his partner as she is seen living with him on records.
