Biographies

William Mead was born approximately 1826 in the town of Ugthorpe, in Yorkshire, Northern England. He joined the British Army although no enlistment record appears to exist. However, whilst posted overseas in Canada at a crucial time in the North America as the American Civil War ground to a close, he appears to have committed the extremely serious offence of striking a superior officer.

No details of the offence are recorded save that he faced a General Court Martial in Quebec and was found guilty of said offence on 7 July 1864. His sentence was life imprisonment and transportation to Australia.

William is clearly shipped back to England because he joins the transport ship Belgravia which departs Portland Harbour on the Dorset Coast on 7 April 1866; arriving in Fremantle in Western Australia on
4 July 1866.

The Belgravia was a 889 ton ship was built at Sunderland in 1862. It was employed as a convict transport for Western Australia on this particular trip it was delivering convicts and warders (plus their families) to the Swan River Colony. This was the thirty fourth of 37 shipments of male convicts destined for Western Australia. The voyage took 88 days a fairly swift transit and no stop-overs. Its cargo was 106 passengers and 275 convicts and John E W Jackson was the vessel's master.

William Mead serves his time in Western Australia, but is eventually at the age of 60 he is allowed full remission of his sentence and is freed from incarceration on 26 October 1886. William eventually died on 16 December 1892 at Leaholm, in the the settlement of East Rockingham in Western Australia.
