Biographies

Edwin was born in Westerham, Kent about 1826. The year is not known for certain as it appears differently in different documents - e.g. census records, prison records, etc.
In June 1841, shown in the census as living at Charles Street Manchester Square, St. Marylebone, with his maternal grandmother Mary Humphrey, mother Frances, brother William, and Emilie Godet - a French girl approximately the same age as Edwin.
In the 1851 census was living at a different address - Coborn Road, Saint Mary Stratford Bow, Poplar, Middlesex - and Emilie was still at the same address.
He married Emilie in 1851.
In 1853 was employed as a Railway Clerk by the Blackwall Railway, London, when he was arrested and charged as an accomplice to a fraud allegedly committed by a Joseph Farrell (who managed to evade the Constable) against the Bank of England. The fraud was alleged at about 3,000 pounds.
Edwin was eventually acquitted at a trial in June 1853.
In December 1853 he was charged with fraud and remanded to the next session in January 1854 at which he was convicted and sentenced to 4 years imprisonment. In December of that year he was able to register the birth of his first son Walter, born in May 1854.
He was back in court again in December 1857 charged with forging and uttering. Convicted in January 1858 and sentenced to 4 years imprisonment.
He was required to appear in the Bankruptcy Court in December 1862.
In February 1866 was convicted of forging and uttering (again), and because of his previous felony conviction was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment, and committed to Pentonville Prison.
In April 1867 commenced transportation to Western Australia aboard "Norwood", arriving in July 1867. In March 1875 married Frances Prince (also a friend of his family in London).
Was on Conditional Release in December 1877 when he took up residence in Fremantle and worked as an "accountant".
He died in his home in Adelaide Street, Fremantle 19th May 1898 and was buried at Fremantle Cemetery the next day.
