Biographies

James Mascord was born in 1821 in Banbury, Oxfordshire, England. In the 1841 & 1851 U.K. census’ his occupation is listed as “Gardener”. He was convicted of stealing sheep in 1865. He was transported to the Swann Colony in WA in 1867 leaving behind a wife and five children behind in Banbury. He spent several years in WA working for the wealthy Tooley family as their gardener. He was highly literate and had earned the respect of the family he worked for. They paid for his return passage to England where he died in 1891 aged 70. Upon hearing of his passing the Tooley family wrote an obituary for James telling of the affection they had for him. James’ younger brother, Thomas Mascord, came to Australia in the 1870’s as an assisted migrant. His homestead “Banbury cottage” is located in Rockdale, NSW as a place of historic interest.
