Biographies

Ellen Lewis was born about 1807. Old Bailey records state she was indicted for stealing two pairs of shoes and an apron from Bridget Magner on 16 November 1831; Ellen was lodging for the night at Bridget's premises in Harris-street. In her defence Ellen stated it had been a wet night and the landlady had lent her the garments. Ellen was sentenced to seven years transportation and arrived in Sydney on the Burrell. She was described as being 4ft 9in, of sallow complexion, with sandy hair and grey eyes, a Protestant, plain cook and maid of all work. She had no education. Ellen was working for the Australian Agricultural Company at Tahlee, Port Stephens, when she received her ticket of leave in 1837. Ellen married convict William Chaplin on 28 September 1833 at Heber Chapel, Cobbity. They had three daughters, Lucy Ann (1838), Eleanor Ann (1842) and Mary (1846). Ellen died 18 August 1859 at Braidwood of 'apoplexy caused by habits of intemperance'.
