Biographies

At age 30 James was transported aboard the 'Argyle'. Arrived in Hobart 4-8-1831 having departed on the 18-2-1831.
Stonemason & Bricklayer.
He was charged with 'Assault with intent to rob'. Tried on 18th December 1830 at the Sussex Quarter Session and sentenced to 14 years.
He had previously been charged with Assault (14 days), and Poaching (2 months), as well as other offences.
A native of Brighton, England. Married with four children.

In August 1834 James was joined in Tasmania by his wife Mary Anne (nee Bishop) and their 4 children, Jane, James, Robert & Martha. Two further children, Hannah & John, were born in Tasmania.
