Biographies

Ellen Fitzgerald was born in Notttinghamshire, England in 1805 - to parents James Fitzgerald and Ellen (Nolan) Fitzgerald.

On 16th October 1823 - at the age of 18, Ellen was convicted in Nottingham Town Quartersessions of shoplifting. She was sentenced to 7 years transportation.

One of 79 female prisoners, she boarded the Convict Ship Henry 2, and departed on 30th September 1824. Also on board were 25 free women and 33 children who travelled to Australia to join husbands and parents.

The Ship Henry 2 arrived in Hobart Town, Van Dieman's Land on 8th February 1825.

During her early years in Australia, Ellen's occupation was as a domestic servant.

Whilst she was in Tasmania, Ellen met and married a fellow convict - Thomas Dugmore. Their marriage took place on 15th January 1831, Ellen was 26 years - Thomas was 43.

Ellen gave birth to their daughter - Jane Elizabeth Dugmore in 1837, in Perth - Tasmania.

Thomas passed away on 15th July 1853 in Geelong, Victoria. He was aged 65.

Ellen Dugmore died on 11th June 1889, at the age of 84. Her final years were spent at the Benevolent Asylum in Hotham, Victoria. Her Last Will and Testament, dated 26th February 1885 - left her Estate of 66 pounds 3s. 10d. to the Superintendant of the Asylum. Ellen was unable to sign her Will, due to her illiteracy.
