Biographies

On 10 December 1826 the brig "Wellington" was transferring 66 convicts from Port Jackson to Norfolk Island when about 250 miles from their destination some of those aboard took over the ship in an act of piracy. Not all convicts were involved in the actions with identified offenders being; John Edwards (Earl St Vincent 1818), William Leddongton (Minerva 1824), Richard Johnson (Hindostan 1821),Edward Coulthurst (Minstrel 1825), Charles Clay Todhunter (Baring 1815), Richard Hicks (Agamemnon 1820), William Brown (Lord Eldon 1817) & William Douglass (Coromandel 1820) ; with James Smith, James O'Neal, James Daley, William Walton & William Ryan (ships unknown) are all noted in newspaper reports of the day. At their trial in Sydney on 21/22 February 1827 all were convicted of piracy and sentenced to death. Five men (Edwards, Leddington, Smith, Johnson & Coulthurst) were hanged in Sydney on 12 March 1827 for their part in the piracy, he remainder all had their sentenced commuted to life transportation to Norfolk Island.
