Biographies

Two assigned convicts of Major James Murdie of Castle Forbes near Newcastle were tried on 10 December 1833 at Supreme Court for attempted murder of John Lanach (Mudie's son in law)on 5 November 1833 and a further four of counselling aiding and abetting.
All six were convicted and sentenced to death with Hitchcock and Poole to be hanged near the site of their crime adjacent to Castle Forbes Patrick Plains, the remaining four Reilly, Perry, Jones and Ryan to be hanged in Sydney.
Jones's sentence was later commuted to 14 years at Norfolk Island. Sentence was carried out. At their trial mention had been made of maltreatment by Mudie and it is noted that questions had been asked resulting in Mudie returning to England not much later.
