Biographies

Richard Bannister JACKSON was born on 24 Oct 1812 in Chester, Cheshire, England, UK.son of John Jackson, carpenter, and Mary, his wife & baptised Nov 6, 1812 at St Michael, Chester. He was convicted in 1839 in Chester, Cheshire, England, United Kingdom and transported to Sydney, New South Wales Australia on the Barossa for 7 years. April 4 1836. Richard Jackson age 24 (born 1812) charged with being drunk and breaking the peace of the City,discharged April 20 1836.August 7 1837,Richard Jackson age 25 charged upon oath with having stolen the following:- one gold watch, one hat, one handkerchief, one silk handkerchief, one silk pocket handkerchief, one pair of gloves, one pocket comb and one gold breast pin, all the property of Zachariah Jones on the 25 August 1837. Sentence was 12 months imprisonment...discharged October 19, 1838. Tried on 11 Jan 1839 with stealing a chemise the property of John Jones an Auctioneer of 44 Lower Bridge Street Chester, was found guilty and sentenced to 7 years transportation. Was sent to the hulk Fortitude at Chatham – the same hulk as his father John had been sent to a couple of years earlier. Richard Jackson arrived in Australia per "Barossa" 8th December 1839,aged 27 yrs. protestant, single. He was charged at Chester City Quarter sessions 11.1.1839 with stealing linen and sentenced to 7 years transportation. Previous conviction - 12 months jail. 5'4" tall, brown hair, bluish eyes. Slight diagonal scar right cheek near the nose.Ticket of leave 46/398. When Richard Jackson arrived in Sydney he was listed as convict 39/1287. Sentence 7 years with a previous conviction of 12 months goal, age 27, able to read & write, single, Protestant, an indoor servant. On the 25.11.1845 he was granted ticket of leave no. 46/384 at Port Macquarie with permission to stay there. On 17 Apr 1846, he was granted a Certificate of Freedom no.46/398 On the 2.6.1851 he was in Sydney and married Catherine Dowd at St. Marys Cathedral (the original one which was subsequently burnt down). Richard Jackson “Barossa” On 28.5.1840 while assigned at Grose Farm did neglect his duty and was sentenced to one month on the treadmill. Discharged to Hyde Park Barracks 28.6.1840. He was convicted on 5 Aug 1840 in Sydney, NSW, Australia sentenced to 14 days on the treadmill, discharged to Hyde Park Barracks on 19 Aug 1840>.5. 8.1840

Geary on 11 Aug 1841 in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. NSW Government Gazette 11 Aug 1841 Page 1089, absconded, Jackson Richard, Barossa, 29, Chester, in-door servant, 5 feet 4 ¾ inches, dark sallow comp, brown hair, bluish eyes, slight diagonal scar on right check near the nose, from W. H. Geary, Port Macquarie, since 28th ultimo.Signed Thomas Ryan, Chief He was convicted in 1850 in Sydney, NSW, Australia an inmate>. He was convicted in 1868 in Maitland, NSW, Australia an inmate of Maitland Gaol>.He died on 6 Mar 1876 at the age of 63 in Tamworth, NSW, Australia. Register of Coroner's Inquests 1834 - 1894. Volume 6 - Archives Ref 4/6615 226 March 6, 1876 Tamworth - Richard Jackson, injuries accidentally received.NSW Death Registration No.10175/1876 6th March 1876 at Tamworth, Robert Jackson,male 54 years, accidentally killed by falling off a wagon, Parents unknown, Informant, Thomas King Innkeeper, Tamworth, Registration at Tamworth 1876. Buried 7 March 1876 at Tamworth where born unknown, marriage unknown.Inquest on same date confirms family story of his accidental death near Tamworth. This death certificate was amended 2003 by the NSW Registry BD&Ms on application from Yvonne Cooper (nee Jackson) and now shows his name as Richard Jackson. His 1st son, Henry Bannister JACKSON was born on 13 Jan 1854 in Scone, NSW, his birth is not in the NSW Index but name & date is shown as prev issue on the birth cert of his brother Thomas Jackson No8884/1860
