Biographies

Despite his Scottish name, Edward was born in Birmingham about 1820. His father is believed to be named James, however there is no further information yet available about his parents or any siblings.
Life in Birmingham was tough and Edward was no exception to the harshness of early Victorian England.
in 1837 at age 17 Edward was convicted for Larceny and was sentenced to 14 days incarceration. A little more than a year later Edward and an accomplice known as 'William Williams' were charged for 'Housebreaking' and at the Warwickshire Court Edward was this time sentenced to 10 years.
Edward sailed to Port Jackson, New South Wales and arrived in December 1839. He was initially sent to work the Cook's River Dam just south of Sydney and later went to Mudgee in central west NSW.
He only served five years into his sentence when he was granted a ticket of leave on condition he remains in the Mudgee district.
Little more is known of him for the following 30 years until his name was mentioned in an article relating to sheep killings at Doughboy Creek in the Hunter Valley - he was the property owner.
Edward married Susannah Miller in the 1860's and went on to have seven children.
They settled in Bendemeer, NSW, where he named his farming property 'Douglas Park'. Edward was recorded as the first teamster in Bendemeer before the arrival of the train line.
Sadly Edward passed away from suicide about 1895, he was survived by his wife and six children.
