James was tried and convicted at Castlebar Mayo County in 1823 and sentenced to 7 years transportation

James arrived Sydney aged 20 aboard Isabella on 16 December 1823 with his Indent showing trade "reaper"

James together with Patrick Sullivan (Brampton 1823), Matthew Craven (Guildford 1824) &'Thomas Cavenagh (transported convict ship not identified) commenced bush ranging activity.
