Russell was born about 1807 Donegal Ireland and was convicted at Londonderry Ireland of "robbery" and sentenced to 7 years transportation

Russell arrived Sydney aged 18 aboard Henry Porcher on 31 December 1825 with his Indent showing trade "knife boy".

Russell was convicted on 5 November 1832 of robbery George Banks Sutton at Parramatta on 3 September 1832 and sentenced to death.
