John was convicted at Monmouthshire USK General Quarter Sessions on 19 March 1862 and sentenced to 7 years transportation, he arrived West Australia aboard Clyde on 29 May 1863.

John was convicted on 2 September 1863 of murder Duncan Urquhart on 16 June 1863 with an axe and sentenced to death.
