Biographies

At the Hereford Spring Assizes of 1800, Thomas Traherne, for a burglary in Bromyard, was sentenced to death. He received his second death sentence in Spring 1802. The offence this time was 'Making his escape from the County Gaol of Hereford whilst under sentence of transportation for life', which confirms that his first sentence was commuted. A few years previously, this conviction would have guaranteed an appointment with the hangman but he was again reprieved. He must have been guarded a little better this time for April 1803 finds him on board the HMS Calcutta.
