Biographies

Originally transported to Australia in 1810 under the name James Sidebottom, absconded from master and returned to England.

Married Mary Furber (nee Bryan) in 1815. Transferred to Newcastle, where he became Chief Constable. Opened first hotel in Newcastle in1823. Granted land in Wallis Plains (Maitland).

Extensive landholder, known as Gentleman John Smith. Died in Newcastle in 1870, in his 84th year.
