Mathew was born 1798 Down County Ireland and convicted at Down 1819 and sentenced to 7 years transportation, he arrived Tasmania aboard Castle Forbes 27 Jan 1820 with Indent showing trade "labourer".

Mathew and Edward Broughton (Earl St Vincent) were convicted August 1831 of escape Macquarie Harbour and sentenced to death.
