Biographies

Thomas Dugmore was born in 1788 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England – to William and Sarah Dugmore.

He was sentenced at the Warwick Assizes on 2nd August 1817 to 7 years transportation. His crime is unknown. Thomas sailed from Portsmouth on 31st August 1818 – aboard the ship ‘Globe’. There were 140 male convicts on board. One death was recorded during the journey.

Thomas arrived in Sydney, New South Wales, at Port Jackson on 8th January 1819. About 84 of the convicted men were then transferred to Port Dalyrmple (George Town), Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) in February of that year, per the ship 'Elizabeth & Henrietta'.

Whilst living in Tasmania, Thomas met Ellen Fitzgerald - also a convict. They were married on 15th January 1831 in Launceston, Tasmania. Thomas and Ellen had one child, Jane Dugmore.

The family moved to Victoria in 1839. It is believed that Thomas may have purchased land in Bourke County, Victoria in 1845.

Thomas died on 15th July 1853 – leaving Ellen a widow at 48 years. He is buried in Geelong Eastern Cemetery - Victoria, in an unmarked grave. Burial Plot information: EAS-COE-OLD-X-825-X 163744996.

Thomas Dugmore is my 3x Great Grandfather – Jane Dugmore (2x) – Joseph Timms (1x) – Eileen Josephine Fenwick (G) – Shirley Joanne Lees (M).
