Biographies

James Jenkins was sentenced to 7 years transportation for stealing 7 sheep with his brother William; he arrived in Sydney in 1802 aboard the convict ship Coromandel. The brothers had already spent 4 years of their 7 year sentence on a prison hulk anchored off Portsmouth so by 1805 they were granted their Freedom. With their sentences served, the Jenkins brothers soon entered into the commercial life of Sydney, as farmers, boat builders and property developers. By 1806 James was leasing 80 acres of land with William Jenkins. Unfortunately the brother’s commercial partnership was cut short when William Jenkins was shot and killed when he went to the aid of the keeper of the Parramatta Toll Gate who was being attacked by armed robbers in May 1814. In the 1814 Muster James gave his occupation as mason and in 1822 he gave his occupation as boatbuilder. In 1815 James married Elizabeth Saunders and they had 8 children, all born in Sydney.
