Biographies

Catherine keen (Keane) a native of Co Limerick Ireland was tried at Surry England 1 December 1828 for "stealing from the person". She was sentenced to Life transportation. She arrived 29 November 1829 to NSW per 'Lucy Davidson' and was assigned to Henry Cooper of Cockle Bay (opposite modern Darling Harbour). Her occupation is given as 'all work', she could both read and write, was Catholic and was aged 22 years (dob c1807), 5ft 3 1/2ins tall, ruddy freckled complexion, brown hair, and hazel eyes. There is an application to marry dated 30 May 1831 to William Carr aged 24 years who arrived free. The marriage never took place. Another application to marry was on 20 November 1843 to Robert Giddens who came free per 'Currency Lass' about 1834. They married at Parramatta 29 November 1843. Children had already been born to this couple as early as 1835. They had more children afterwards and Catherine died in 1859. Her parents were Thomas Keane and Mary Benton.
