Biographies

John Pentley was born in about 1793 in England, possibly in Durham. He married Charlotte Bishop on 22 December 1828 in Pitt Town, New South Wales. They had two children during their marriage. He died before 23 April 1843 in Parramatta, New South Wales, at the age of 50, and was buried there in St Patrick's Cemetery.

1825 John Pentley lived in Parramatta, New South Wales, as a Government servant employed by John Campbell Esq of Parramatta.

22 DEC 1828 @ AGE 35 Marriage: John Pentley married Charlotte Bishop (1791–1851) in St James C of E, Pitt Town, New South Wales. Shown as Pintla on the Register.

3 JUL 1829 Daughter Susanna Jane (1829–1887) was born at Richmond, NSW.

14 May 1832 Conviction: Supreme Court. (Before the CHIEF JUSTICE.) John Pentley, alias John Ogilby (sic), was indicted for stealing one cow and one bull, the property of Henry Baldwin, at Richmond, on the 3d of January last. Guilty - Death recorded.

25 APR 1833 Birth of Daughter Margaret Elizabeth (1833–1874) • Richmond NSW Australia. Speculation exists as to the paternity of this child, as John was incarcerated at the time1. Clearly the death sentence was commuted. He may however have been assigned to Charlotte for some or all of his sentence.

1841 • Residence Kurrajong, Dist. Windsor, Co. Cook: 1 adult male, occupation agricultural labourer + 1 female child aged 7 years or less. The most likely identity of this child is Margaret Elizabeth.
