Biographies

I am not a descendant of John so please feel free to ‘claim’ him from me. I have the surname Briggs registered with The Guild of One-Name Studies https://one-name.org/ hence I collect Briggs information (a never ending task).

John Briggs 20yr and his brother Joseph Briggs 18yrs were caught sheep-stealing.
Born about 1816, aged 20yrs at the time of trial
Religion: Protestant. Occupation: Labourer.
Description: Height 5 feet 3 inches; complexion ruddy & freckled; hair light brown; eyes hazel; Eyebrows meeting; chin declining; small scar back of right thumb; Brother of no: 37-845.

Crime: sheep stealing.
Trial: Hertford Quarter Session, County Session 27th June 1836.
Sentence: transportation for life.
Ship: Prince George, sailed 20th December 1836 & arrived 8th May 1837, NSW South Wales.

Conditional Pardon granted on 10 July 1850. Pardon no: 50/432.
Application to Marry: 1847 followed by marriage: John Briggs (31yrs bachelor) married Bridget Dowd (spinster aged 20yrs, came free) on 15th September 1847 at St John the Baptist, Mudgee, NSW. Both signed with an ‘X’. Witnesses: John Cummings & Honorah Hudson, both of Mudgee.
Children: Edward Briggs born 1849. NSW Reg No: 258/1849 V1849258 66 & Lydia. A. Briggs born 1852 NSW Reg No: 637/1852 V1852637 144.

John died 20th January 1873, Inverell, NSW.
