10 Oct 1819. Marriage to Mary Gutsell (1790–1850). Ticehurst, Sussex, England.

29 Jul 1820. Convicted and sentenced to be hanged for stealing a mare valued at 6 pounds. Sussex Assizes, Sussex, England.
The death penalty was reprieved on condition of transportation for life.

Sep 1820. Captivity. Portsmouth, Hampshire, England.
Held "at Hulks" which means a floating gaol, on board an unseaworthy ship (Leviathon) at Portsmouth.

25 May 1837. Issued Conditional Pardon.

29 Sept 1839. Death. Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Coroner's inquest (30 Sep) states "Accidentally killed Intox." A newspaper article noted James being heavily intoxicated on his way to/from Sydney for supplies, with the cart turned on top of him. Family story was buying steel and crushed.
