During Governor Phillip's exploration
of the Hawkesbury River in 1789, Phillip climbed a small hill near the river
and named it Richmond Hill in honour of Charles Lennox, the third Duke of
Richmond who was Master General of Ordnance in the Pitt administration.
Richmond Hill was first settled by Europeans in 1794.
When Governor Macquarie was formalising the Macquarie five
towns in 1810, Richmond was the name that Macquarie gave to the Richmond Hill District.
