Windsor can lay claim to be the third European settlement in Australia after the settlements at Sydney Cove and Parramatta. Originally settled by Europeans in 1794 after 22 settlers took up land in the area. Soon after, the erection of a Government House, Store and Military Barracks, as well as some convict built huts, the area became commonly known as "Green Hills". Established as one of the Macquarie five towns in 1810, Windsor was the name given to the District of Green Hills. Governor Macquarie named it Windsor because he considered the site resembled the site of the Royal town of Windsor in England. |
