abt 1898 - 1900: Born.

1818 (Lent): Salop (Shropshire). Tried (with a William Garbett) for larceny. Convicted and sentenced to 3 months imprisonment.

17 March,1819: Salop Assizes (Shrewsbury). Tried, convicted and sentenced
to 7 years (transportation) for stealing from a dwelling house.
He gave his native place as Glazely, Shropshire and his occupation as a farm labourer.

12 May, 1819: Received at prison hulk, Bellerophon, moored at Woolwich, to await transportation.

5 July, 1820: Departed for Van Diemen's Land aboard Caledonia (1)

17 Nov, 1820: Arrived in Hobart, Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania)

20 Nov, 1823: Gibson / Neglect of duty yesterday 25 lashes (Revd R. K.)
16 March, 1824: Jn. Gibson / Absconding from his master’s premises and coming to Hobart Town without a Pass 50L and returned to PW ( )
13 May, 1824: PW / Absent from his lodgings after bell ringing P.B. 1st Class (Revd R.K.)
19 May, 1824: Falsely reporting that Jno. Gibson of Clarence Plains did steal 12 sheep from Rd Westlake 50 lashes and 3rd class P.B. (AWHH and G. V. R.)
1 Nov, 1828: FS / Leaving his cart and bullocks standing in Liverpool St and no person to mind them – fined 10/- ? (J Spode)
29 March, 1830: FS / Drunkenness yesterday – fined 5/- CPM
9 May, 1831: FS / Drunkenness yesterday – fined 5/- CPM (end of transcription)

6 June 1831: Thomas, now a free man, married Ann Wood, a convict serving a life sentence for highway robbery, in Hobart.

31 May, 1833: FS / Leaving his service before the expiration of his Contract his wages ? 17/6d (CPM and M Friend) (end of transcription)

14 June, 1873: Found dead in Derwent River, Hobart. Verdict of inquest - drowned.

The following deaths were recorded:-
Mary Ann Garbett aged 18 months died 19/1/1841 (accidental) (RGD 577/1841 Hobart)
male Garbett aged 13 days died 19/7/1842 (convulsions) (RGD 1101/1842 Hobart)
Caroline Garbutt aged 6 months died 1/1/1847 (convulsions) (RGD 1288/1847 Hobart)

Other sources e.g. Coronial records and the Female Convicts in Van Diemen's Land Database also list Sarah (1831 - 1903), Emily (1832 - 1833), Diana Anne (1838 - 1844)) as children of Ann and Thomas. Various spellings of the surname were used in these registrations. The most common spelling was Garbett, but others were: Garbeth, Garbatt, Garbutt. Most of the events were registered by Ann Garbett who gave her mark. In the registration of the female in May 1841 (RGD 337/1841) the mother’s name is given as Mary.

On the registrations of the birth of his children Thomas' occupation is listed as sawyer or, later, carpenter.
