Biographies

Henry Forder Wells (mother's maiden name was Forder) was born in Norwich Norfolk UK in 1825, the son of Henry Weeks Wells Edwards, and Elizabeth Forder. He had 2 sisters, Elizabeth and Eleanor. Eleanor was my great great grandmother. The Wells family originally came from Coltishall, Norfolk. Henry was 19 when he was convicted of larceny (stealing sheets and blankets) at Norwich Assizes and sentenced to 7 years hard labour in Tasmania. His name was recorded as Foyster Wells. Henry sailed aboard the Marion from Woolwich in 1845 and was eventually freed in 1853 (after serving an extra 2 months of hard labour for absconding) and he subsequently sailed to Melbourne aboard the Clarence in 1853. His Surgeons Report at time of freedom stated that Henry was well behaved.
