Biographies

Henry was born in Harefield in 1822. His parents were Joseph Barnaby 1776-1847 and Alethia Irons 1782-1851.

Henry married Jane Thrift 22nd September 1844 in Harefield.
Jane Thrift was born 4th May 1826 in Hillingdon.

Henry was convicted of Larceny (Burglary) of a Dwelling in 1846 at the Old Bailey (Highest Court in England) and he was sentenced to be transported for 15 years on 15 June 1846. Being guilty of a theft valued over £5 was punishable by Transportation.

He eventually departed to Australia on either 6th or 9th March 1848 from Woolwich, London.

He was carried on the ‘Anna Maria’ to either Van Diemens Land (arrival 7 June 1848), now Tasmania, or Geelong, Port Philip, near Melbourne (arrival 22June 1848). The ship dropped off 27 male prisoners in Van Diemans Land and the other 163 prisoners in Geelong. I cannot find out which port he disembarked at.

Upon arrival he was probably given a Conditional Pardon enabling him to be put to work.
