Biographies

Edward was born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England in 1819 to Richard and Sarah Long. He was convicted at Norfolk (Great Yarmouth) Quarter Sessions on 10 May 1839 for breaking into a house and stealing some knives and forks (AU convict records erroneously say for stealing a copper boiler but that was a separate offence for which he was aquitted) and sentenced to transportation. After being held on the hulk, Fortitude, for several months he sailed to Port Jackson on the Mangles. Edward married Mary Hamilton 1831-1915 in Queanbeyan, NSW and they began a family of 12 children shortly settling in Tambaroora, NSW during the gold rush but later emigrating to the gold fields of the west coast of New Zealand. Edward died in Greymouth hospital, aged 65, and is buried in Karoro cemetery. Mary died in Wellington, aged 84, and is buried in Karori cemetery.
