Biographies

William Overend was born in November 1801 in Batley, Yorkshire, England - the eldest of 12 children to Isaac Overend 1776-1863 and Rachel Robertshaw 1780-1871 Isaac and Rachel are my 4th Great Grandparents, making William my 3rd Great Grand Uncle.

He was baptised on 15th November 1801 at St Peter's Church in Birstall, Yorkshire. On the 11th November 1823, he appeared in Bow Street Magistrate's Court in London, charged together with Francis Skinner (a fellow soldier) with assaulting Alexander Lyall, a respectable market gardener from Kensington, and taking from him a bundle containing clothes and other property. On the 3rd December 1823 at the Old Bailey, the prisoners were found guilty and sentenced to be transported for life. William Overend was held on the Woolwich Prison Huk until 16 December 1824 when they were transported to Hobart, Tasmania on the Lady East, arriving 9 April 1825.
