Biographies

John Matthews b.1793 Convict per “Surrey” 1814, serving Life, convicted at Somerset Assizes,for “Theft- 2 Bullocks” a Protestant Labourer.
The Surreyʼs journey took 156 days & claimed 47 lives through a Typhus epidemic; and was the 1st ship to be “Quarantined” in the colony at a camp (now Jeffery st Kirribilli.)
He received “permission to marry” in 1822, to Faith “Hearn” nee Cooper aged 22 (2nd Marriage) 29/2/1823...at St Lukes at Liverpool.
They lived at Parramatta.
She was the daughter of Robert Cooper born 1759 Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England; son of George Cooper & Faith Stephenson; a soldier in the 1/73 Highlander regiment, his wife Ellen nee Hesketh of Ormskirk Lancashire England b.1769-1823 and daughters Faith aged 9, Ann and Hannah travelled to NSW with his detachment aboard the ship Ann II in 1810. Ellen daughter of James & Ann Hesketh.
Robert in 1813 was transferred to the Veterans Company due to his age & stationed at Parramatta & probably helped construct the Female Orphanage at Parramatta (still standing today). Later transferred to Windsor, he was teacher & involved with his church at St Matthews at Windsor as a Sexton & Teacher.
In 1823 he was discharged, & received a land Grant of a Govt. surveyed 100 acres anywhere in the colony. He later taught Blacksmithing at the Male orphan school. He died 15th November 1837 at Parramatta, & buried locally at St John Cemetery.

John Matthews was a servant to John Wylde judge advocate in 1819 & obtained a conditional Pardon in 1825. Initially a labourer, then shop keeper & later became a farmer in South Creek Prospect (a village very near todayʼs St Marys) after a land grant in 1833. Faith Matthews died March 1851 aged 49 a farmers wife. They had 10 children....
John Matthews died Jan 1867 aged 77 at his sons residence at Emu Heights near Penrith...Matthews Street can still be be found today.
