Biographies

HENRY MILNER - TIMELINE
John Milner born 1814 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England son of Samuel Milner & Ann Babbs. Ann Babbs died before 1816. Samuel marries Ann Wigfall, a widow on 5th February 1816.
Henry born on 1 May 1817 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England son of Samuel Milner & Ann Wigfall.
Ann Milner born 1819J in Sheffield, England daughter of Samuel Milner & Ann Wigfall.
Eliza Milner born 1822 in Sheffield, England daughter of Samuel Milner & Ann Wigfall.
Samuel worked at the local steelworks as a Fork Filer and Henry was a Fork Maker.

1833 Henry sentenced to 1 month in prison for larceny.

1835 – Samuel, Henry and John Milner are on trial for larceny. Samuel found not
guilty, Henry found guilty of ‘larceny before felony’ and sentenced to
transportation for 7 years and John is guilty of larceny and imprisoned for 4 months. Henry is now 18.

14 January 1835 (different document), Henry is sentenced to 7 years
transportation to Australia for stealing cloth.

Henry is held in the prison hulk ‘Justitia’ in London for 8 months until his ship departs Torbay for Australia on 7 September 1835.
The ‘John Barry’ arrives in Port Jackson, New South Wales on 17 January 1836. There were 321 male prisoners on board and the voyage took over 4 months. There were 3 deaths on board.
On arrival in Port Jackson Henry is assigned to John Plaistow and sent to Maitland Gaol.
1843 Henry completes his 7 year sentence.

1850 – Henry issued with a Ticket of Leave but it was cancelled as he was convicted of stealing a £10 cheque.
1850 – Henry is committed for trial in Bathurst on 18th April and sentenced to 5 years hard labour on the roads based in Sydney Gaol. He was in Bathurst Gaol on the 6th May but the next day was sent to Cockatoo Island near Parramatta to help build grain stores and a dock that was to bring in new prisoners.
1855 February 19th. Henry is pronounced ‘Insane’ and sent to Paramatta lunatic Asylum on 1 March 1855.
On 23 March 1860 Henry dies in Parramatta Lunatic Asylum and is buried in All Saints Cemetery, Parramatta, New South Wales. He was 43.

Henry Milner is reputed to be the father of Mary Jane Milner who according to the English census records was born in Grimesthorpe, Brightside, Sheffield in 1848. We cannot find any record of her birth or baptism in England.
On Mary Jane’s marriage certificate in 1865 in Brightside, she states that her father Henry Milner is a labourer. She married Tom Smith, brickmaker, also from Sheffield.
