NEXT MEETING

At our next meeting on Wednesday 9 July, Dr Anne-Maree Whitaker will talk about William Cox and Cox's Road. Anne-Maree has a PhD in Australian history and is an independent professional historian who has researched and written on a wide range of 18th-20th century Australian topics. She is also a Councillor with the Royal Australian Historical Society.

FAMILY HISTORY CLASSES 2014

New family history classes on offer between June and August 2014 as follows:

  • BIRTHS, DEATHS & MARRIAGES RESOURCES - Tuesday 24 June 6.30-8.30pm Find out what resources are available to search for births, deaths and marriages in your family history research.
  • COMING TO GRIPS WITH THE CENSUS - Thursday 10 July 6.30-8.30pm In this family history session, find out how census and electoral records help confirm where people live.
  • BREAKING DOWN YOUR BRICKWALLS - Tuesday 26 August 6.30-8.30pm Strategies to help solve some of the challenges in your family history research.

CASTLEREAGH CEMETERY

Between 17th & 18th May 2014, vandals attacked the historic Castlereagh Cemetery and tagged and desecrated a number of headstones. For images see http://goo.gl/mPCYfv Some of the convicts that are buried in this cemetery include:

  • Stephen SMITH 'Surprize' 1790 Died 1811
  • William FITZGERALD 'Duke of Portland' 1807 Died 1812
  • Dennis BRADRICK 'Atlas' (2) 1802 Died 1814
  • Bridget MULLIN 'Providence' 1811 Died 1814
  • William REARDON 'Queen' 1791 Died 1814
  • Mary Ann RAND 'Brittania' 1798 Died 1814

Update from AncestryLibrary

Hawkesbury Library subscribes to Ancestry Library and it is available to use in the Library for free (on library PCs or wireless). The following new resources are now available to access:

  • NSW Surveyor General Field and Sketch Books, 1794-1903
  • NSW Public Service Lists, 1858-1960
  • NSW Government Gazettes, 1853-1899
  • Fremantle WA Passenger Lists, 1897-1963

Hawkesbury Library subscribes to Find My Past Australia, UK & Ireland. For more info check the blog http://blog.findmypast.com.au/ New records include:

  • New Zealand Lands & Surveys Department Nominal Roll of Officers 1901
  • New Zealand Electoral Roll 1925
  • Pre-1901 Irish census records

Members with internet access should check out the following interesting sites. The Library has free access to the internet, contact 4560 4460 for bookings at Windsor & 4578 2002 for Richmond bookings. If you have your own laptop we also have free wireless. The password is available from the Information Desk.
