Biographies

John Teague appeared before the court at the Hereford Assizes of August 1802. He was accused of altering four drafts from the Brecon Bank, from the sum of £10 each to £50. Although found guilty, the trial judge invoked a little-known procedure which was used occasionally at the time, namely: 'The case left for the opinion of the twelve judges'. This was used when the judge found difficulties relating to procedure or interpretation of statute and referred the case for the consideration of his colleagues in the judiciary. Be that as it may, they must have decided he was liable and he was sentenced to death but his sentence must have been commuted because in November 1803 we find him aboard the 'Coromandel I', Transported for life.
