Biographies

Edward Thomas BROWN was tried at the Central Criminal Court, London (The Old Bailey) using the alias
Edward THOMAS and it is this alias that has been used on his Convict Papers here in Tasmania. It is however
noted on the Conduct Record of Edward THOMAS that his proper name was Edward Thomas BROWN. He
was tried with Joseph GREEN and Catherine CURTIS for "stealing one watch, value £3.0.0, the goods of George
ALLEN, from his person"2. In other words, he was working as a "pick pocket" as part of a gang. Joseph
GREEN and Edward THOMAS were both sentenced to 10 years transportation. Catherine CURTIS was again
tried for a second offence with an Enos HANCOCK; namely stealing 1 watch, value £15.0.0" This offence
occurred on the 10th of October 1847 and the offence with THOMAS and GREEN happened on the 3rd of
November.
When applying for permission to marry Elizabeth Wathen it was given on the basis that he had to marry under his proper name Brown which he did on the 18of July 1854 at St Marks Church, Pontville
Edward was born in Birmingham in 1827
