Biographies

Henry Blake was transported from England as a Convict on 21st March 1831 and arrived at Pi Jackson on 25th July 1831, aged 18, on the first voyage of the "Camden" from London. He was charged at Newgate on 26th September 1830, aged 17, and given a 14 years sentence.
According to the NSW Convict Intent, Henry Blake (#40/1365) was aged 18 when he arrived. He was able to read and his religion was Protestant. He was Single and a native of Surrey. His trade or calling was listed as Servant but the MSX Prisoners for Trail register lists him as a Cooper and also that he was held in the Hulks rather than Newgate Prison. The offence he committed was Pocket Picking and he was tried at Newgate (Prison), Middlesex on 16th September, receiving a 14 year transportation sentence. He had not had any previous convictions. Henry was described as 4ft 11½in tall with a ruddy slightly freckled complexion, light brown hair and hazel eyes. He boarded the Camden as a Gaol Delivery. The ship's Master was William Fulcher and the Surgeon Superintendent David Boyter. On arrival at Port Jackson he was assigned to Robert Howe of Sydney. On the Indent the columns were his Colonial History information should have been entered, they are are blank. This may be because he ended up in Victoria and the information may not have been sent back to Sydney. Henry’s records may have been transferred to Victoria. He was recorded on the VPRS 110/P0 Register of Convicts (VA 856) Colonial Secretary's Office, c.1838 – 1852, (Alphabetical Return of Convicts service in the district of Melbourne) as arriving on 25th July 1831 on the ship Camden.
HENRY BLAKE, Theft Pocket Picking, 16th September 1830.
Reference Number: t18300916-217
Offence: Theft Pocket Picking
Verdict: Guilty
Punishment: Transportation
1681: HENRY BLAKE was indicted for stealing, on the 23rd of July, 1 handkerchief, value 2s. the goods of John Enoch Abell, from his person.
JOHN ENOCH ABELL. On the 23rd of July I was in St. James'-park, about three o'clock - it was the day the King went to the House of Lords; I felt something at pocket, turned round, and saw the prisoner, who dropped my handkerchief - I recognized him, and gave him into custody.
Prisoner. He said he did not think I was the lad.
Witness. I never mentioned any thing of the kind; I had no doubt whatever of him, and he dropped it - he had not moved his feet.
JOHN SLARK. I am an officer. I took the prisoner.
Prisoner's Defence. I was walking along - this gentleman came and accused me of stealing his handkerchief - he had it in his hand; there was another boy, but he did not go after him.
GUILTY. Aged 17. - Transported for Fourteen Years.
Gaol Delivery: A court which met to hear the accusations against the prisoners in a jail and decide their guilt or innocence.
The Old Bailey was the court of gaol delivery for nearby Newgate Prison.
Henry signed his marriage record by making his mark (X). His marriage record does not show that he had applied for and was granted permission to marry, which should have appeared on the record because Henry had not completed his 14 year term of transportation. That is not unusual though as many convicts did not apply after they had received their Ticke of Leave.
Possible marriage:
26 Dec 1842 St James Ch, Melbourne, Vic to Martha Lever.
