Biographies

William Thwaites, son of James Thwaites and Frances Etheridge, originally came from East Bradenham, Norfolk, England. After being in custody for the 3rd time before the age of 20, he was sentenced to 10 years for housebreaking and stealing silver spoons. He was first put on the prison hulk ship called HMS Fortitude, which moored at Chatham, Kent, before being sent to Tasmania on a ship called Emily I.

Once William's sentence was up in 1852, he was transported back to England, where he lived in Greenwich, Kent, and worked as a carman. In 1858, he married Susan Ambey Brown. They had 6 children, 5 of which survived infancy. His last child, Betsey Maria Thwaites 1869-1946, is my Great Great Grandmother. He died in 1887 in Greenwich, Kent, leaving his wife a widow.
