Biographies

Francis William Byrt, born 1826 in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, was the son of William Byrt and Harriet nee'brooks. In the 1841 Census of Shepton Mallet he is shown living with his widowed father and elder sister, Charlotte, in one of the poorest areas of the town. My great grandmother, Mary Ann, was his younger sister. Like his father, Francis was a farm labourer. He was found guilty at the Somerset Assisez of steeling a number of silver watches. Francis was given 142 days days off his sentence, but was found murdered near Hobart six years after his arrival in Australia.
